Topic: HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR PAIN?

I have osteoarthritis. I've found that ibuprofen (400 mg/6 hrs.) works the best for
me . Taking it with food, usually something whole grain like woven wheat crackers
(the type made from only wheat & salt) or plain oatmeal + fat free yogurt really
cuts down on the gastric side effects. If I'm really hurting I will take naproxen. The other NSAIDs are just too harsh for me to tolerate. Hops tea works for
me, or an nice IPA for those who can drink.

I also find that if I walk (slowly) at least fifteen or twenty minutes a day wearing my 'dad shoes' aka New Balance I have less knee pain (go figure!)

Added on edit, 08/08- Have been doing the fitness walking now for six weeks-
much less knee pain and smaller waist as well, YAY!Very Happy

i suffer from neuropathy on my left foot for 18months now as consequence of car accident.
i have to deal with neuropathy pain that is very annoying and also with chronic pain. to be honest, i dont understand quite well how it works, i understand that i feel pain full time.
the doctors prescribing amitriptyline and the classic paracetamol for pain, and the cocktail:gabapentim, codeine and diclofenac to treat neuropathy.
im attending counseling meetings and she advise me and amaizing CD. is very short but i think its effective, i have now also on my mobile. it called: Copying With Pain - its part of TALKING LIFE programmes in association with The Pain Research Institute. i borrowed from a local library here. it is helping me, is like hipnosis. make me relax, and when i realize the pain is gone. unfortunately come back. i learn to be brave and to get used to and to control. we cannot give power to chronic pain. we must be in charge, not the pain. Shame on you

It doesn't matter what disease or condition may have caused you (or a loved one) pain. Are there methods you have tried to decrease or manage your pain? If so, please describe some or feel free to ask questions to one another. There are many ways of reducing pain, but each individual is different and different diagnoses carry their differences in treatment, but pain is pain. Your suggestion(s) may help another person. Even knowing that you are not alone can be of aid.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS IN WHICH YOU HAVE TRIED TO REDUCE YOUR PAIN? HAVE THEY WORKED? IF SOMETHING HASN'T WORKED FOR YOU, WHAT MIGHT THAT BE? THIS IS A FORUM TO HOPEFULLY HELP ONE ANOTHER WITH SUGGESTIONS, FRIENDSHIP, AND THE ABILITY TO ASK OTHERS QUESTIONS REGARDING CHRONIC PAIN.

I am a victim of MS complicated with Lupus and Fibromialgia.I have not been able to manage my pain at all times.I don't want to stay drugged up so I take very little pain meds. Some days I spend my time sitting on the pond bank(when the ground is dry enough for my chair)fishing.Other times I meditate in bubble baths.

Hi everyone - I am a veteran when it comes to pain as I have pain 24/7 over the last 30 years plus! The only way I could manage my pain is through morphine based drugs - but I don't go there because it will only cause another set of problems that I don't have now. I've been down the route of acupunture - no use. But if the pain gets so bad that I can't move I'll check in at a chiropractor who have a wonderful way of allieving pain in a very direct way.

I have found that over the years my pain threshold has gone up a few scales. So what appears painful to someone wouldn't register as pain to me. There are techniques I use when visiting a dentist - I don't bother with injections for a filling I simply push the tip of my index finger into my thumb and concentrate all my thoughts of pain to this area. You'll still get pain in your tooth area but it will be standable.

The worst time is at night as there are no distractions to take my mind away. As my leg muscle will begin to elongate in bursts that wakes you up. I've found taking a small dose of clonozapan helps elongate the muscle slowly which allows me to get some sleep.

It's not alll bad as I have a positive frame of mind and just get on with life as best I can. I actually work full time and have done for thirty years - pain is an attitude of mind. If you don't mind - it doesn't matter.

I HAVE FIBROYMYALGIA, OSTEO, TWO BULDGING DISCS AND SOME KIND OF DISEASE THAT MAKES BONE SPURS WHERE MY TENDONS CONNECT IN MY BODY. WHAT I DO FOR MY PAIN IS I HAVE A CHAIR MASSAGER WITH HEAT AND TAKE HOT BUBBLE BATHS WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE I CAN GET MYSELF OUTTA THE TUB. I DO HAVE TO TAKE MORPHINE AS THE PAIN IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT IT. FIND THIS PLACE IS MAYBE A GOD SEND. TRYING TO TALK TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO CLUE IS SO HARD AND SOME FAMILY MEMEBERS JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND TO THE DEGREE THAT I HURT. BUT I STILL AM THANKFUL AND LOVE MY LIFE. YOU ALL TAKE CARE AND HAVE AN AWESOME DAY.
